The Dandie Dinmont is a long, low-stationed working terrier with a curved outline, a large domed head topped with a silken topknot, and a scimitar-shaped tail. It was bred in the border country between England and Scotland to go to ground after otter and badger, and was recorded as a distinct breed in the early 1700s, making it one of the oldest terrier breeds.

It is also the only breed of dog named after a character in literature, from Sir Walter Scott’s 1815 novel Guy Mannering.

That proportion is what gives the breed its distinctive long, low silhouette. Overall balance matters more than any single measurement.

The names come from farmer James Davidson, who called all of his terriers either Mustard or Pepper. His dogs became the model for the modern breed.

They are medium-energy rather than hyper, and come with a surprisingly deep baritone bark for their size.

Dandies generally enjoy playing and cuddling with children and are less hyper than many small breeds. They tend to suit households with older children who understand how to handle a long-backed dog correctly.

No. The Dandie has a crisp double coat that does not shed, which may make the breed suitable for some people with allergies. Unlike breeds with continuously growing hair, the coat has a set length of roughly two inches.

Because the coat does not shed, dead hair has to be removed by hand stripping at least a couple of times a year. Your breeder can do this, or teach you to do it with a stripping tool.

Between strippings, long hairs can be plucked from the coat by hand to keep the outline neat. The silky topknot is a defining breed feature and is maintained rather than clipped away.

The DDTCA participates in the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) program, which requires two tests for certification. For Dandies those are:

Glaucoma surfaced in the breed 20 to 25 years ago and, thanks to responsible breeding decisions, now appears only occasionally. Ask any breeder for CHIC documentation before you commit to a puppy.

The DDTCA describes the Dandie as an amazingly healthy breed given the small size of its gene pool. That said, long-backed breeds can be predisposed to spinal issues, so it is worth discouraging repeated jumping from furniture, supporting the body when lifting, and keeping your dog at a lean weight.

A well-bred Dandie typically lives 12 to 14 years.

The Dandie is one of the rarest native breeds in Britain. The Kennel Club lists it as a vulnerable native breed, with just 81 puppies registered in the UK in 2024. Numbers in the United States are small as well, so expect a wait and plan well ahead.
